'The Bible' producers dismiss devil character's resemblance to Obama

By Alex Dobuzinskis

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The popular U.S. TV miniseries "The Bible" has plunged into controversy over what some viewers see as a physical resemblance between an actor playing Satan and President Barack Obama, but producers on Monday dismissed any likeness as coincidental.

The controversy began after the History Channel aired the latest episode of the popular series on Sunday evening, with Moroccan actor Mohamen Mehdi Ouazanni playing the part of the devil.

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck said on Twitter, "Anyone else think the Devil in #TheBible Sunday on History Channel looks exactly like That Guy?"

Other people on Twitter also said they saw a similarity and posted messages such as "Satan looks like Obama -- say what?!" and "whoever played Satan looks like Obama ... creepy."

The History Channel said producers of the show, which takes viewers through the stories of the Bible's Old and New Testaments, had no intent to cast an actor who looks like Obama as Satan, and that any resemblance was coincidental.

"This is utter nonsense," Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, executive producers of "The Bible," said in a statement.

The actor who played Satan "is a highly acclaimed Moroccan actor," the producers said. "He has previously played parts in several biblical epics - including satanic characters long before Barack Obama was elected as our president."

Burnett is the British-born producer of the reality series "Survivor" and his wife Downey is best known for playing an angel in the 1990s series "Touched by an Angel."

The History Channel said "The Bible" was produced with an "international and diverse" cast and that it was "unfortunate that anyone made this false connection."

A similar controversy broke out last year, when some viewers of the violent HBO drama series "Game of Thrones" noticed a prosthetic head on a stake shown in one episode bore a resemblance to former President George W. Bush.

The creators of "Game of Thrones" apologized and said they did not shoot the scene with that intention.

On Sunday, "The Bible" was the most-watched show between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., with 10.8 million total viewers. Over 50 million viewers have seen at least part of the 10-part miniseries since it debuted on March 3.

Researchers trap light, improve laser potential of MEH-PPV polymer

Mar. 18, 2013 ? Researchers from North Carolina State University have come up with a low-cost way to enhance a polymer called MEH-PPV's ability to confine light, advancing efforts to use the material to convert electricity into laser light for use in photonic devices.

"Think of a garden hose. If it has holes in it, water springs out through a million tiny leaks. But if you can eliminate those leaks, you confine the water in the hose and improve the water pressure. We've plugged the holes that were allowing light to leak out of the MEH-PPV," says Dr. Lewis Reynolds, a teaching associate professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the research.

MEH-PPV is a low-cost polymer that can be integrated with silicon chips, and researchers have long sought to use the material to convert electricity into laser light for use in photonic devices such as optical amplifiers and chemical sensors. However, attempts to do this have failed because the amount of electricity needed to generate laser light in MEH-PPV was so high that it caused the material to degrade.

Now researchers have developed an inexpensive way to confine more light in the material, which lowers the energy threshold needed to produce focused laser light by 50 percent. The researchers did this by sandwiching the MEH-PPV between two materials that have matching indices of refraction, efficiently reflecting light back into the MEH-PPV and preventing light from escaping. This results in lower thresholds for laser light.

"This approach is fairly inexpensive and could also be easily scaled up for large-scale processing," Reynolds says.

The "sandwich" also makes the material more stable by limiting the MEH-PPV's exposure to oxygen. This makes the material less subject to degradation due to photo-oxidation, which occurs when materials are exposed to both light and oxygen.

"This is a meaningful step forward for low-cost fabrication of these devices, but further optimization is required," says Dr. Zach Lampert, a former Ph.D. student at NC State and lead author of the paper. "We're working on that now."

China, US: Stop hacking accusations, says official

BEIJING ? China and the United States should avoid "groundless accusations" against each other about cyber security and hacking into each other's computer systems, newly installed Premier Li Keqiang said on Sunday.

Li's comments, at the close of China's annual meeting of parliament and a day after he assumed the premiership, come amid a war of words between Beijing and Washington over cyber attacks and national security.

A U.S. computer security company said last month that a secretive Chinese military unit was likely behind a series of hacking attacks mostly targeting the United States.

Responding to a reporter at a news conference, Li said he "sensed the presumption of guilt" in the question.

"I think we should not make groundless accusations against each other, and spend more time doing practical things that will contribute to cyber security," Li said.

"This is a worldwide problem. In fact, China itself is a main target of such attacks," he said. "China does not support, indeed we are opposed to, such activities."

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will press China to investigate and stop cyber attacks on U.S. companies and other entities when he visit China this week, a senior U.S. official said on Friday.

President Barack Obama also raised U.S. concerns about computer hacking in a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, the same day Xi took office.

Pop & Lock, Fool - Charles Payne - Townhall Finance Conservative ...

So, maybe now banks will begin to lend money after getting the green light from the Federal Reserve to plow a bunch of dough into share buy backs and dividend hikes.? Only two banks, Ally (yes the one that seems to have the most ads on television) and BBT (had to resubmit its documents to the Fed, which may have been the reason it failed based on a qualitative assessment, yet they did hike the dividend) fail the so-called Stress Test.? Many say the test was too easy with respect to capital ratios and loses anticipated in the event of disaster.

I'm not sure if the Fed used super computers or took wild guesses, but I can say right now nobody involved ever took Psychology 101. If there was a classic meltdown, the American public would have to come to the rescue again. Yes, too big to fail only became more problematic as the bigger banks have only increased in size and risk to the general public. I think the government was more concerned with finding ways to siphon money from banks than anything else.

Of course, that's the same story with all the mean industries.

Here's the scenario over nine quarters ending in 4Q14:

    > Stock market plunges 50%
    > Housing freefalls 20%
    > Banks losses mount to $462 billion

But, all would be well, there would be mild runs by depositors, but those institutions would hold like pillars.

    Yeah ... right!

There would be mass chaos and blood on the street. Heck, in 2008, the Fed funneled $1.2 trillion in loans to banks on the sly and only came clean after losing a court decision. The banks would crumble under a repeat of 2008-2009.

It's too soon to worry about the banks failing, but that stress test is bogus, and after they finish lavishing themselves with billions in stock buybacks and dividend hikes, we might get some lending to Main Street. Perhaps, as that needle moves, we could then start to watch the building of a feeding frenzy.

This whole thing was an exercise in blowing smoke, and I don't think the public is buying it. Sure, we'll all play the game and act stupid or suspend disbelief for the sake of not missing out the run up that would have to proceed such a devastating correction (think Dow 16,000), but do us a favor and stop the games and lend some money!

Okay ... Maybe the Apocalypse is near

I know they've been around for a couple of years, but this spring they will be everywhere- open toe boots!

Check out UFC 158 picks from Kevin Iole, Maggie Hendricks and Cagereaders like you

UFC 158 is going down on Saturday night. Here are picks from Yahoo! Sports columnist Kevin Iole, Cagewriter editor Maggie Hendricks and readers like you.

Kevin Iole ? Georges St-Pierre W5 Nick Diaz: I see Nick spending a lot of time on his back eating elbows from Georges. That won't bode well for his chances. If Nick can goad Georges into a standup battle, the entire complexion of the event changes, but I think despite all the animosity, Georges will fight the same precise style he has in the past.

Maggie Hendricks ? Georges St-Pierre TKO4 Nick Diaz: The last time GSP was angry at his opponent going into a fight was against Josh Koscheck. GSP's jab got him the win. He's had plenty of time to listen to Diaz's remarks and prepare a game plan to stop Stockton's finest.

[Related: Order UFC 158 on Yahoo! Sports]

Cagereader - Nick is real slow. GSP is real fast. I think speed beats slow. At least it has for the last 60 years I have been watching fights -- Jim Lowrie

Cagereader - Diaz by TKO 4th round. I believe that Diaz has gotten into GSP?s head. In all the interviews GSP has been reactive and emotional. Since GSP requested this fight instead of taking on the true number 1 contender, Johnny Hendricks, it confirms that Diaz has gotten into his head. GSP will not get into a striking match with Diaz instead he?ll take it to the ground risking being submitted by Diaz?s excellent BJJ. However, before taking Diaz down he will have to walk through some punches. The ?punches in bunches? will stagger GSP and Diaz will finish him. -- Eddie Ledezma

    ****

Kevin Iole - Carlos Condit W3 Johny Hendricks: Condit is such a complete fighter that it's hard to pick against him. Hendricks clearly has the KO power to end it at any time, and his wrestling ability could take over the fight. But Condit has a more varied game, is more experienced and I think will find a way to pull out a win.

Maggie Hendricks - Johny Hendricks W3 Carlos Condit: Hendricks has added surprising power to his already-elite wrestling skills. He also has a title shot to fight for. Though Condit can be elusive, his takedown defense won't be enough to stop Hendricks.

Cagereader - Hendricks by Decision. Hendricks will push the pace and press condit back against the cage early, and he will use superior clinch work to get the takedown and control condit on the ground. I can also see Hendricks getting multiple takedowns off of Condits kicking game as the time goes by and scoring ground and pound to win each round. -- Greg Bernard

    ****

Kevin Iole - Jake Ellenberger TKO2 Nate Marquardt: This is a huge fight for Ellenberger, who needs not only a win, but an impressive one, to convince people he belongs in the upper echelon of the welterweight division. I think he gets it by knocking Marquardt down and finishing him with ground-and-pound.

Maggie Hendricks - Nate Marquardt W3 Jake Ellenberger: Marquardt's last fight in Strikeforce was a disappointing loss to Tarec Saffiedine. Marquardt knows how important a win is for his career. It might not be exciting, but it will end with Marquardt's hand being raised.

[Related: Nick Diaz accuses Georges St-Pierre of being on 'plenty of steroids']

Cagereader - Well I actually think the UFC put this fight together with Nate in mind to help him have a safe return back to the UFC. Nate went down a weight class, has been focused on becoming better, and has something to prove. He was already a beast who just lost motivation at middle weight. All fighter have a fighter's chance but Nate is too strong and will control Jake the entire fight. MARQUARDT WINS! by KO! -- Larry B. Fortner

    ****

Kevin Iole - Nick Ring SUB2 Chris Camozzi: To me, this is very much a pick'em fight, but I was impressed with Ring against Court McGee. Both have had some nice wins recently, but I lean toward Nick.

Maggie Hendricks - Nick Ring W3 Chris Camozzi: I agree with Kevin that this is a pick 'em fight. Ring's wins have been impressive, and he'll have a home crowd behind him.

    ***

Kevin Iole - Mike Ricci W3 Collin Fletcher: Ricci has been very up-and-down and hasn't won two fights in a row in a long time. But he's fighting in the proper weight class in this bout and I think he'll grind out a victory.

Maggie Hendricks - Mike Ricci W3 Collin Fletcher: Both fighters need a win to avoid a losing streak. Training with GSP and a loud home crowd will give Ricci and edge.
