Assad says Syria received Russian missile shipment: Lebanese media

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria has received the first shipment of a sophisticated air defense system from Russia, President Bashar al-Assad was quoted as saying, sending a signal of military strength days before an EU arms embargo on the country lapses.

Russia had promised delivery of the S-300 missile system to the Syrian government despite Western objections, saying the move would help stabilize the regional balance at a time of insurgency in Syria waged by Western-backed rebels.

Moscow is a staunch ally of Assad and it has appeared to grow more defiant since the European Union let its arms embargo on Syria expire as of June 1, opening up the possibility of the West arming the Syrian rebels.

"Syria has received the first shipment of Russian anti-aircraft S-300 rockets," Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar newspaper quoted Assad as saying in an interview due to be broadcast later on Thursday.

More of the missiles would arrive soon, he was quoted as saying.

A source close to Russia's Defense Ministry said there had been a "bank transfer" in connection with the S-300 transaction but that Russian banks were becoming increasingly nervous about dealing with Assad.

"There were some problems with payments because big Russian banks were scared of dealing with Assad, but there was a bank transfer," the source said. "There are also not big banks and banks that are not based in Moscow. Beyond the down payment there was almost certainly a second payment, maybe a third."

Last year, a source close to Russia's weapons export monopoly Rosoboronexport said Syria had paid 20 percent of the contract price, but that the S-300 deal was frozen because of the country's civil war.

The United States, France and Israel have all called on Russia to stop the missile delivery.

More than 80,000 people have been killed in Syria since peaceful protests against four decades of Assad family rule morphed into a civil war, pitting the president's forces and his ally, Hezbollah, against Syrian rebels and a flow of Sunni Islamist militants who have come to help them from abroad.

Moscow says the expiry of the EU embargo complicates U.S. and Russian-led efforts to set up a peace conference between the Syrian government and its opponents, who demand an immediate end to Assad family rule.

GENEVA 2 CONFERENCE

The interview with Assad was to be released on Thursday on Al Manar, a television station linked to Assad's ally, the Shi'ite Muslim militant group Hezbollah.

Assad said he planned to go to the "Geneva 2" conference, al-Akhbar reported, though he was unconvinced of a fruitful outcome and pledged to continue fighting the uprising.

Officials in Israel, the United States' main ally in the region, say the S-300 could reach deep into the Jewish state and threaten flights over its main commercial airport near Tel Aviv.

Al-Akhbar said Assad also stressed ties between his forces and Hezbollah militants now openly fighting on the Syrian side of the Lebanese-Syrian frontier. "Syria and Hezbollah are part of the same axis," al-Akhbar quoted him as telling al-Manar.

"The Syrian army is the one fighting and leading the battles against the armed group, and this fight will continue until all those who are called terrorists are eliminated."

Syria straddles the fault lines of several regional and sectarian conflicts, and the violence in the country is increasingly seeping across its borders.

Israel, wary of any Syrian weapons being sent to Hezbollah in Lebanon, has already carried out three air strikes against Damascus to stop suspected transfers.

A recent series of strikes in Damascus, which shook the entire capital, stoked an angry reaction from Syria. State media outlets said Syria would respond to any further attacks and would also allow militant groups to attack Israel from a shared border on the Golan Heights.

Israel captured much of Syria's Golan Heights in a 1967 war and occupies the territory today, but Assad and his father, the deceased president Hafez al-Assad, had kept the border quiet for decades.

"The Syrian government will not stand in the way of any Syrian groups that want to wage a war of resistance to liberate the Golan," Assad was quoted as saying in the interview.

Hezbollah has said it is willing to support groups that chose to launch operations from the Golan.

Israel has become particularly wary of the S-300 shipments although Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said on Tuesday that the shipments were not yet on their way.

Earlier this month, Israel was reported to have told Washington that Syria had begun payments for a $900 million purchase of S-300s, with an initial deliver due within three months.

Toshiba Canvio Connect (750GB)

The Toshiba Canvio Connect (750GB) ($109.99 list) is a contender as one of the best drives we've seen at PC Labs. While it is a fast, capacious hard drive that fits in a coat pocket, it's the additional extras that make this drive remarkable. The USB 3.0 drive comes with 10GB of cloud storage and a PogoPlug PC utility that makes your files available on the Internet. If you have a need for backup and file availability, then take a look at this drive. It's a lot easier to setup than a NAS, but lets you get to your files over both the Internet and your local network.

Design and Features
The Canvio Connect is available in a range of colors, including red, white, black, blue, and silver. The 750GB review model seen here is glossy white. It measures about 0.5 by 3.25 by 4.5 inches (HWD), so it fits easily into your pants or coat pocket. The drive is a bit smaller than the LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 Slim ($149) and the G-Technology G-Drive Slim ($109.99), though the Canvio Connect is made of polycarbonate while the G-Drive Slim and LaCie P'9223 are clad in aluminum. The top is adorned by a Toshiba logo and activity LED, and one face on the side has the micro-b USB port for the included USB 3.0 cable. The usual serial/model number sticker is on the bottom, along with four rubbery feet to keep the drive in place on your work surface.

The included 750GB can hold a couple hundred thousand pictures and MP3 files, or a few hundred movie files. This size should also be enough to back up most if not all the files on your laptop's internal hard drive, especially if you have an SSD-powered ultrabook. The drive comes pre-formatted for NTFS (Windows native format), but Mac users aren't left in the lurch.

In addition to possibly reformatting the drive to HFS+, as is standard procedure for most other drives, the Canvio Connect comes with Tuxera's NTFS for Mac utility, so you can natively copy files to the drive. Mac OS X can read NTFS drives, but it can't write to them without a third party utility. Most drives will make you reformat the drive for use with Macs. Other drives that come with NTFS utilities are the Editors' Choice for portable hard drives Seagate Backup Plus ($139.99) and Editors' Choice for wireless media drives Seagate Wireless Plus ($199). Both Seagate drives also have the benefit of a USM interface, which allows users to connect adapters for FireWire, eSATA, and Thunderbolt connectors in addition to USB 3.0.

The included NTI Backup Now EZ is a full backup utility that can save incremental copies of your entire hard drive. This is, of course, provided your internal drive has a capacity of 750GB or less. NTI Backup Now EZ works on Windows PCs, but if you're a Mac user you can simply reformat the drive HFS+ and use Time Machine for the same level of protection.

The Canvio Connect also comes with a copy of PogoPlug PC, which can be used to serve the files on the drive to your other PCs, Mac, and devices on the Internet. PogoPlugPC also comes with 10GB of cloud storage (up from the 5GB in the retail version of PogoPlugPC). You do have to keep the Canvio Connect connected to an online PC or Mac during the signup process to activate the 10GB could storage or if you want to serve files from the drive to your PogoPlug account. Once signed up, you can access the files in your 10GB cloud storage or the files on your online hard drive from other PCs, Macs, and via apps on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android devices.

Performance
The Canvio Connect is a bit slower than other drives we've tested lately, but not overly so. For example the Canvio Connect took 25 seconds to copy our standard 1.2GB test folder, but the G-Drive Slim (20 seconds) and Seagate Backup Plus (15 seconds) were quicker. The story is the mixed on the standardized tests, where the Canvio Connect (5,736 points PCMark 5, 1,467 points PCMark7) lagged behind the Seagate Backup Plus on one test (6,463 PCM5, 1,449 PCM7), though it was a smidge faster than the G-Drive Slim on both tests (5,328 PCM5, 1,322 PCM7). Numbers aside, you'll likely not notice the difference unless you are constantly copying files to the drive, and in that case you'd want a more robust desktop hard drive.

The Toshiba Canvio Connect (750GB) is one of the best pocket drive that we've seen. It's very compact, capacious, and has decent speed. It's also a good buy when you add the included software like the NTI backup and PogoPlus PC service. However, the speed, innovation, and flexibility of the Seagate Backup Plus allow it to hold on to its Editors' Choice for portable hard drives.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Toshiba Canvio Connect (750GB) with several other hard drive side by side.

'Melissa & Joey' renewed for fourth season by ABC Family

By Tim Kenneally

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Melissa Joan Hart's adventures in crowd-funding might have fizzled, but she still has a place at ABC Family.

The network has given a fourth season to Hart's comedy "Melissa & Joey," the network said Tuesday.

ABC has also given a back order for additional episodes for the third season of "Melissa & Joey," which premieres May 29. The additional episodes of the third season will air next year.

The back order and renewal will bring the series to 100 seasons, which will make the series the first ABC Family comedy to do so.

"One hundred episodes is a great accomplishment for any series, and we are thrilled to give ?Melissa & Joey' the opportunity to achieve this milestone, as they've delivered hundreds and hundreds of laughs over the seasons," said Kate Juergens, Executive Vice President, Programming and Development and Chief Creative Officer, ABC Family.

The series, which stars Hart as local politician and former wild child Mel Burke and "Blossom" alum Joey Lawrence as her "manny" Joe Longo, has delivered solid ratings from the network since its premiere, which was ABC Family's most-watched comedy debut ever.

Colorado marijuana regulations signed into law

DENVER (AP) ? A set of laws to govern how recreational marijuana should be grown, sold and taxed was signed into law Tuesday in Colorado, where Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper called the measures the state's best attempt to navigate the uncharted territory of legalized recreational pot.

The laws cover how the drug should be raised and packaged, with purchasing limits for out-of-state visitors and a new marijuana driving limit as an analogy to blood alcohol levels. Hickenlooper didn't support marijuana legalization last year, but he praised the regulatory package as a good first crack at safely overseeing the drug.

"Recreational marijuana is really a completely new entity," Hickenlooper said, calling the pot rules "commonsense" oversight, such as required potency labeling and a requirement that marijuana is to be sold in child-proof opaque packing with labels clearly stating the drug may not be safe.

Colorado voters approved recreational marijuana as a constitutional amendment last year. The state allows adults over 21 to possess up to an ounce of the drug. Adults can grow up to six plants, or buy pot in retail stores, which are slated to open in January.

The governor said Tuesday he believes the federal government will soon respond to the fact that Colorado and Washington state are in violation of federal drug law. But Hickenlooper didn't have a specific idea of when.

"We think that it will be relatively soon. We are optimistic that they are going to be a little more specific in their approach on this issue," Hickenlooper said. Pressed for details, the governor jokingly referred to unrelated scandals surrounding the U.S. Department of Justice.

"They've been kind of busy," Hickenlooper said.

Colorado's new marijuana laws include buying limits for out-of-state visitors. Visitors over 21 would be limited to one-fourth of an ounce in a single retail transaction, though they could legally possess the full ounce.

Colorado laws attempt to curb public use of marijuana by banning its sale in places that sell food and drink that aren't infused with the drug, an attempt to prevent Amsterdam-style pot cafes. Food laced with the drug also would have to be to-go orders.

Colorado's laws also include a first-in-the-nation requirement that marijuana magazines such as High Times be kept behind the counter in stores that allow people under 21. That provision has prompted promises by attorneys representing at least two publications to challenge the restriction, which would treat pot magazines similar to pornography.

Besides the magazine restriction, Colorado's laws differ in several more ways from proposed marijuana regulations pending in Washington state. Colorado makes no attempt to ban concentrated marijuana, or hashish, unlike Washington. Colorado also has different possession limits on edible marijuana. Colorado also is planning a brief grandfather period during which only current medical marijuana business owners could sell recreational pot.

Both states are poised to require all pot-related businesses to have security systems, 24-hour video surveillance and insurance. One of the Colorado laws signed Tuesday gives state pot businesses a chance to claim business deductions on their taxes, something currently prohibited because the industry is illegal under federal law.

Colorado's laws also propose a series of new taxes on the drug. If voters agree this fall, recreational pot would face a 15 percent excise tax, with the proceeds marked for school construction. There would also be a new recreational pot sales tax of 10 percent, in addition to regular statewide and local sales taxes. The special sales tax would be spent on marijuana regulation and new educational efforts to keep the drug away from children.

"Public safety and the safety of our children were at the forefront of our minds," said Sen. Randy Baumgardner, R-Hot Sulphur Springs, the sponsor of some of the pot bills.

Lawmakers and a few dozen marijuana legalization activists on hand to see the pot bills signed into law agreed that marijuana laws will see many changes in coming years if the federal government doesn't intervene.

"We are going to be talking about marijuana in the state of Colorado for some time," predicted Rep. Mark Waller, R-Colorado Springs, a sponsor of the stoned-driving law.

Mason Tvert, spokesman for the national legalization advocacy group the Marijuana Policy Project, predicted a lot of states will watch to see how recreational pot regulation works in Colorado and Washington.

"We can regulate the sale of alcohol in a responsible manner, and there's no reason we can't regulate the sale of something arguably less harmful ? marijuana," Tvert said.

Soda and illegal drugs cause similar damage to teeth: Acids erode enamel

May 28, 2013 ? Addicted to soda? You may be shocked to learn that drinking large quantities of your favorite carbonated soda could be as damaging to your teeth as methamphetamine and crack cocaine use. The consumption of illegal drugs and abusive intake of soda can cause similar damage to your mouth through the process of tooth erosion, according to a case study published in the March/April 2013 issue of General Dentistry.

Tooth erosion occurs when acid wears away tooth enamel, which is the glossy, protective outside layer of the tooth. Without the protection of enamel, teeth are more susceptible to developing cavities, as well as becoming sensitive, cracked, and discolored.

The General Dentistry case study compared the damage in three individuals' mouths -- an admitted user of methamphetamine, a previous longtime user of cocaine, and an excessive diet soda drinker. Each participant admitted to having poor oral hygiene and not visiting a dentist on a regular basis. Researchers found the same type and severity of damage from tooth erosion in each participant's mouth.

"Each person experienced severe tooth erosion caused by the high acid levels present in their 'drug' of choice -- meth, crack, or soda," says Mohamed A. Bassiouny, DMD, MSc, PhD, lead author of the study.

"The citric acid present in both regular and diet soda is known to have a high potential for causing tooth erosion," says Dr. Bassiouny.

Similar to citric acid, the ingredients used in preparing methamphetamine can include extremely corrosive materials, such as battery acid, lantern fuel, and drain cleaner. Crack cocaine is highly acidic in nature, as well.

The individual who abused soda consumed 2 liters of diet soda daily for three to five years. Says Dr. Bassiouny, "The striking similarities found in this study should be a wake-up call to consumers who think that soda -- even diet soda -- is not harmful to their oral health."

AGD Spokesperson Eugene Antenucci, DDS, FAGD, recommends that his patients minimize their intake of soda and drink more water. Additionally, he advises them to either chew sugar-free gum or rinse the mouth with water following consumption of soda. "Both tactics increase saliva flow, which naturally helps to return the acidity levels in the mouth to normal," he says.

Genome-wide analysis suggests 'no single genetic recipe' for the mental disorder

Using a novel method of analyzing genetic variations in families, researchers at Johns Hopkins have found that individually harmless genetic variations affecting related biochemical processes may team up to increase the risk of schizophrenia. They say their findings, reported May 28 in Translational Psychiatry, bring some clarity to the murky relationship between genetics and schizophrenia, and may lead to a genetic test that can predict which medications will be effective for individual patients.

"It's long been clear that schizophrenia runs in families, but schizophrenia as a simple inherited disease didn't make sense from an evolutionary point of view because people with the disease tend to have fewer children and the disease-causing genetic variants shouldn't survive," says Dimitri Avramopoulos, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of psychiatry in the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine. Moreover, he says, studies searching for schizophrenia-linked gene variants have found only weak connections to a few genes nothing that would explain the persistent prevalence of the disease, which affects about 1 percent of the population.

Most geneticists believe that the culprit in so-called complex genetic diseases such as schizophrenia is not just one genetic variant, but more than one acting in concert. It's also likely that individual cases of the disease are caused by different combinations of variants, Avramopoulos says. He and fellow researchers took this hypothesis a step further, theorizing that while our bodies can usually compensate for one faulty gene that affects a particular system, more than one hit to the same system is likely to tip people toward disease.

The research team devised a technique for analyzing gene-sequencing data that explores whether variants cluster in a subset of cases in a non-random way. After finding support for their hypothesis in previously obtained data on 123 families with at least two schizophrenia-affected members, they decided to sequence genes connected through a biochemical chain reaction that has been linked to the disease in 48 inpatients. Known as the neuregulin signaling pathway, that chain reaction relays signals within the nervous system.

As they had predicted, the researchers found that some of the families had multiple neuregulin signaling-related variants while others had none, a distribution that was highly unlikely to result from chance. Moreover, the schizophrenia patients with neuregulin signaling variants experienced more hallucinations but less impairment than the other schizophrenia patients in the study.

"These results support the idea that there's no single genetic recipe for schizophrenia, but that a buildup of mutations in a pathway related to the disease like neuregulin signaling can be the culprit," Avramopoulos says. "The results are also evidence for the current theory that schizophrenia isn't a single disease at all, but a suite of related disorders." Those patients in the study who did not have neuregulin signaling-related variants likely carried variants in a different pathway instead, he notes.

While the results of the study were surprisingly clear-cut given the small number of families in the study, Avramopoulos cautions that larger studies are needed to confirm the results before drawing any firm conclusions. He also plans to study the exact roles of the schizophrenia-linked variants the team identified. Finally, the encouraging results mean it would be worthwhile to apply the new analytic method to other common diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, which also appear to have complex genetic roots.

###

Other authors on the study were Alex Hatzimanolis, John A. McGrath, Ruihua Wang, Tong Li, Philip C. Wong, Gerald Nestadt, Paula Wolyniec, David Valle and Ann Pulver, all of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (grant numbers R01MH057314, R01MH068406, R01MH092515 and R01MH085018) and the Johns Hopkins Brain Science Institute.

Randy Taran: Memorial Day: Also Remembering Those Who Are Here

Randy Taran, Founder & CEO of Project Happiness, producer of the award-winning Documentary and author of The Project Happiness Handbook, talks about ways to be happier with small changes that yield big results. Below is a post about helping our returning soldiers reconnect with their path to happiness.

This Memorial Day let's makes some time to think about not only those who have given their lives for their country and not returned -- what about those returning soldiers who have given their inner lives and who are now paying an enormous price? What about the growing number who, though they make it home alive, feel dead on the inside because their mental and emotional lives have taken the biggest hit? "As many as several hundred thousand may now suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, experts say. They struggle with anxiety, anger, depression, flashbacks and nightmares. The ailment can take years to emerge, and many more cases are likely to appear." While this Memorial Day we honor those that have given their bodies for their country, it's also time to honor and give attention to those who have given their hearts. The good news is that there is hope.

The Problem of Stigma:
First, it's important to recognize that for the multitudes of men and women who suffer from PTSD, there is a built-in stigma in the military that makes it hard for those warriors to get the help they need to rebuild their lives. For many, having mental health issues signifies weakness, and they have been trained to be strong. While it is widely accepted to see a doctor for something physical, when the wounds that are disrupting a soldier's life are mental or emotional, they are expected to be stoic, to tough it out and press on. Even though they are back from war, there is no inner peace, and it can be humiliating to admit how bad the situation really is. The stigma itself is a major problem that needs to be addressed head on. In actuality, it takes a lot of strength, self-awareness and courage to say, "All that I hold dear is falling apart, my life is not as it should be -- I need to get help."

Meds Alone Are Not The Answer:
Let's look at the type of remedies that are being offered. For those who do have the courage to seek help, they often have to wait long periods for appointments, and follow-ups are not consistent. The prescription meds, which are often the first course of action, while sometimes helpful, can often dull, disorient and further isolate those soldiers trying to find relief. The combination of drugs and behavioral therapy does not work for many. It's no surprise that veterans try other ways to self-medicate to ease the pain. Suicides among returning soldiers is a growing problem. A Forbes article reports that "veterans now commit suicide at the rate of 22 a day, or almost one an hour." Many cannot find the ways to transition from their intense experiences and highly structured lives in the military to the vastly different expectations, and lack of set structure they encounter when they return home. Even reconnecting with family and loved ones presents huge challenges when sleep deprived and tormented by anxieties.

New Signs of Hope:
The good news is that there are new signs of hope. A promising approach can be seen in programs that have been designed to treat PTSD with a combination of stress reduction and mindfulness. "The collaborative study from the University of Michigan Health System and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System discovered the eight-week mindfulness-based group treatment plan was more effective than traditional treatment. After eight weeks of treatment, 73 percent of patients in the mindfulness group displayed meaningful improvement compared to 33 percent in the treatment-as-usual groups." Congressman Tim Ryan has written a book called The Mindful Nation, which promotes the use of yoga and meditation-based practices to heal the inner wounds of war and help our soldiers reintegrate into society. Project Welcome Home Troops is one example of the programs that have seen great success in very little time. The new documentary Free the Mind tells the compelling story of how it has changed lives.

Call to Action:
As a mother with children almost the same age as many of the soldiers, it's time to look at some new ways to heal these young people who have given their inner lives in service. How can we make a difference and get them the help that will serve them? These individuals who have given so much, at such personal cost, are real and living and they are reaching out -- this Memorial Day is a reminder that they, their loved ones and families deserve our help.

Trading Currency To Make Money | Binary Options

One of the most popular new investment opportunities to emerge in the past couple years is the foreign exchange market or forex market. Up until just recently it was virtually impossible for the ordinary investor to participate directly in the foreign exchange markets and buy and sell currency for profit. In the past the foreign exchange market has been primarily traded by the ten largest banks in the world. Wealthy investors and companies would have to apply and get permission from bank managers and bank presidents to get a foreign exchange trading account. Then would have to keep hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash with the bank just to keep the account open. Now with the increased transparency of the currency markets and technological advancements in electronic trading, forex brokers have taken over the role of the rich investor and are able to offer individuals the opportunity to trade smaller amounts of currency through them. While this opens up new markets to independent investors, it can also be dangerous to people unfamiliar with trading currency and the relationship you have with your broker. Finding the right forex broker is essential to your success when dealing with this type of investment for several reasons. The most obvious is that your forex broker will provide you with the software to trade on your account. You need to make sure you are very familiar with the trading platform and that it contains all the features you want. Some of the most popular features people look for are: the ability to trade directly from your charts, one click trading and robotic or algorithmic trading. The next likely conflict of interest to take into account is the accuracy and timeliness of your brokers price quotations. Every forex broker will provide somewhat different prices on currency pairs depending on many factors including which major bank they trade with, their trading volume and the speed of their software, among others. An easy gauge to help you is to watch the spreads between the bid and ask prices. The difference between those prices is what you will pay in commissions and it should be clearly stated on their website about what that price range will be. When looking at their real time quotes the price ranges should remain similar to what the broker has stated they would be. Third, unlike trading stocks online where your stock broker matches your buy order with another customers sell order, your forex broker is the direct counter party to your trade. This means that your forex broker may stand to profit should the market move against you. Conversely, if your broker has not properly hedge themselves, they may suffer financial loses should your trade be profitable for you. A lot of countries have guidelines detailing how much money the brokerages must be capitalized with in order to successfully fund customers trades. Look into their financial statements to help determine whether that broker is adequately funded and that they have been able to hedge against losses in the past. After you make sure the broker you are looking at has the right qualifications, also search for that company within forums and social networking sites to find other people who have traded with them in the past and learn more about their experience. If the broker has a forum, search through it and look for unfavorable mentions. If there are no negative postings they might have been removed, so see if any of the forum members have posted on a third party site. Search engines can be a effective tool when looking for a forex broker so use them to find comments, news stories and financial information on your broker.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can you trade currency online with just your bank account?
I am interested to find out how to trade currency online. I have noticed that money fluctuates quite frequently and in my slow tip toe into investing I would like to find out how trade currency online for purpose of making a few dollars when a countries finance makes a recovery.
Recomendations on things to read on the subject would be great as well.

    • ANSWER:
You can't just use your bank account. You'll need to find a forex broker (just do a google search to find one).

As for things to read - do a search for 'babypips' - or see my source below. Their website teaches people all about how to trade forex - perfect for you.

Maybe also read the best book on any kind of financial market trading, called 'Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom', by Van Tharp. Despite it's cheesy title, it is very very good.

  2. QUESTION:
Is it better to trade currencies or invest in stocks?
With what method do people usually make more money? I never really heard of many people trading currencies. Does that mean it's not that good to do that?

  3. QUESTION:
what is the best way for trading currency?
I am looking for the best way to trade currency.

    • ANSWER:
I trade currency (Forex, FX etc). This market is minimally regulated & is significantly larger than the US Stock market. 90% of all the people that try Forex trading lose all their money. Of the winners.... they lose 40% of all their trades.

Many brokers actually trade against you. They make money when you lose money.

I love this market.... but.... take six months to a year before you put in 1 cent. Learn the skills you'll need. Practice. Backtest. Start out very small. Don't believe 90% of what you see from the brokers. Always move slowly. Part of the way to win in this market is picking trades carefully. It's always better to not trade than lose money.

This is 100 times more riskier than stocks.

Read up on this. After you learn a little more, feel free to email me. DON'T JUMP IN!!!!!!!!

  4. QUESTION:
What is the best site for trading stocks and currency exchange?
I am completely new to the world of trading stocks or currency, but I want to get started. I see ads for all these different websites (ameritrade, etrade, etc.), and I was wondering, which (if any) would be the best for a beginner? I'm not looking to get rich quick, but I would like to start investing my money for the long term.

Also, which if any of these sites offers a way to trade currencies? Ideally, I would become a member of the site with the best combination of both of these (trading stocks and currency).

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
There is no best on-line company

Mostly all brokerage firms provide their clients with on-line services, including trading platforms, latest market & financial news and research.

Customer need to select the site that is best for them. Traders have requirements in a site, while investors have other requirements.

Although most sites are geared to general securities and commodities, however customers may have special needs for the types of products they trade, and the markets in which they trade.

It seems that the most popular firms for on-line investing all of which provide excellent platforms and services are; Scottrade; Chas.Schwab; TDAmeritrade; Fidelity; E-Trade and Thinkorswim.

Based on your question, the last thing you should be looking for is an "on-line" site,
You should first educate yourself about the securities markets and the products traded on each.
Get to learn the terminology, the rules and the various strategies.

visits to some websites like MSN Money and Yahoo Finance. (http://moneycentral.msn.com/home.asp http://finance.yahoo.com/ )
While at MSN following the strategy lab analysts to get a feel for what the pros are doing and why. This site has some basic information for beginners. If any site offers free information, take it. Other website that can provide instructions and help with procedures and terminology are
      Investopedia - http://www.investopedia.com/ Stock Charts - http://stockcharts.com/
      Other - http://www.investorshub.com/ http://www.1source4stocks.com/

  5. QUESTION:
can i make money off trading currencies?
Hi, im 14 and i have saved 450. I want to make some money so is it possible to make money off trading currencies and how can i?

Swedish capital returning to normal after week of violence

By Mia Shanley and Simon Johnson

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden's capital was relatively calm on Saturday night with only isolated incidents of violence by youths after nearly a week of car-burnings and vandalism that have highlighted growing inequality in Swedish society.

Police had brought in reinforcements from around the country to stem the rioting and were out in force in the poorer suburbs of Stockholm that have seen the worst incidents.

"It is pretty calm," police spokesman Lars Bystrom said. "It isn't worse than a normal night."

Bystrom said 12 people had been taken into custody in the south of the Swedish capital and that several cars had been set on fire in different parts of the city.

He declined to say whether the police believe the wave of rioting, in which gangs of youths have attacked police stations, schools and other buildings and burned hundreds of cars, was over.

In Husby, in the northwest of the city, residents celebrated the Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, helping bring a festive atmosphere to one of the areas worst hit in recent days by the rioting.

FAULT-LINES

A week of violence has exposed a fault line between a well-off majority of Swedes and a minority - often young people with immigrant backgrounds - who are poorly educated, cannot find work and feel pushed to the edge of society.

Underscoring Sweden's ambivalence toward its open immigration policies, an anti-immigrant party has risen to third in polls this year, and some analysts say the riots could swell its ranks.

Speaking on Swedish radio, the leader of the main opposition party, the Social Democrats, said the causes of the rioting were a lack of jobs and education.

"I get angry when schools are burned down, but then there are those who are drawn into this because they feel their situation is hopeless," Stefan Lofven said.

"I see it as a lack of trust in society," he said.

Rioting has mainly been contained in Stockholm, though on Friday night in Orebro, a town in central Sweden, some 25 masked youths set fire to three cars and a school and tried to torch a police station, police said.

The same night, some 200 kilometers (124 miles) to the southwest in Linkoping, several vehicles were set on fire and youths tried to torch a school.

The rioting was sparked by the police shooting on May 13 of a 69-year-old man, who media said was killed when officers stormed his apartment because they feared he was threatening his wife with a large knife. Media said he was a Portuguese immigrant, which police would not confirm.

MASKED YOUTHS

The violence has echoes of rioting in recent years in Paris and London but has been relatively mild in comparison. There has been no looting, hardly any injuries and few arrests.

Much of the capital has gone about business as normal, and even affected suburbs look normal by day.

Still, it has shocked a nation that has long taken pride in its generous social safety net, though some seven years of center-right rule have chipped away at benefits.

One recent government study showed that up to a third of young people aged 16 to 29 in some of the most deprived areas of Sweden's big cities neither study nor have a job.

Youth unemployment is especially high in neighborhoods such as the ones where the riots have taken place, home to asylum seekers from Iraq to Somalia, Afghanistan and Latin America.

About 15 percent of Sweden's population is foreign-born. While many foreigners are from neighboring Nordic countries, others are drawn by the country's policy of welcoming asylum seekers from war-torn countries.

The gap between rich and poor in Sweden is growing faster than in any other major nation, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Sexual assault is a 'scourge' on U.S. military: Hagel

(Reuters) - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called sexual assault a "scourge" on Saturday as he addressed graduates of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where a sergeant stands accused of videotaping female cadets in the showers.

"Sexual harassment and sexual assault in the military are a profound betrayal - a profound betrayal - of sacred oaths and sacred trusts," Hagel said. "This scourge must be stamped out."

His comments came a day after President Barack Obama delivered a similar message to graduates at the U.S. Naval Academy, saying sexual assault threatened to erode trust and discipline in America's armed forces.

The Pentagon is reeling from a series of sex-related scandals in recent weeks, including cases in which military advocates for victims of sexual assault were themselves accused of sex crimes.

A study released by the Defense Department two weeks ago estimated that reports of unwanted sexual contact in the military, from groping to rape, rose 37 percent in 2012, to about 26,000 cases from 19,000 the previous year.

At West Point in New York state, Sergeant First Class Michael McClendon was charged last week with four counts, including indecent acts, dereliction of duty and cruelty, the Army said.

McClendon had served as a tactical non-commissioned officer at the academy since 2009, a job that put him in charge of mentoring and training a company of about 121 cadets.

The incidents have embarrassed the U.S. military and prompted members of Congress to introduce legislation designed to toughen up the Pentagon's handling of sex crimes.

Hagel, in his address, noted that budget cuts were impacting military readiness and morale. But he cited sexual assault and sexual harassment among other, growing threats to America's all-volunteer force.

"You will need to not just deal with these debilitating, insidious and destructive forces but rather you must be the generation of leaders that stop it," he said.

Dozens march in Ukraine's first-ever gay rally

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? At least 50 gay rights activists have marched peacefully in the country's first gay rally despite a court ban and attempts to disrupt the event.

Participants of the Saturday's rally in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, held banners against discrimination and derogatory stereotypes of gays.

Riot police guarded the rally and prevented attempts by a dozen men to attack the activists.

While the recognition of gay rights advances in much of the West, antipathy toward homosexuals remains strong in Ukraine and other parts of the former Soviet Union.

Homosexuality was a criminal offense in the Soviet Union and societal resistance to it remains strong more than two decades later.

The highly influential Orthodox Church vehemently opposes gay rights.

Stocks barely move as market ends week down

Stocks barely moved in trading Friday but Wall Street closed out its first weekly loss in a month.?Concerns over the Federal Reserve curtailing its support for the economy and sharp falls in Asian markets have pushed stocks down this week.

Trader Peter Tuchman, left, works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Thursday. Stocks ended down this week as traders worried about how committed the Federal Reserve remains to keeping up its bond-buying program.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 0.91 of a point to close at 1,649.60. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 8.60 points to 15,303, a gain of 0.1 percent. Procter & Gamble supported the Dow with an increase of 4 percent.

Both indexes had their first weekly losses since the week ending April 19. Concerns over the Federal Reserve curtailing its support for the economy and sharp falls in Asian markets rattled investors this week. Some investors are concerned that the Fed will scale back its effort to support the economy sooner than they expected.

The S&P 500, widely used by mutual funds as a proxy for thestock?market, lost 1.1 percent for the week. It's still up 15.7 percent for the year.

Marty Leclerc, the managing partner of Barrack Yard Advisors, an investment firm in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, said the weekly drop wasn't cause for concern. Even market rallies have to take the occasional break, he said.

"It's up like a rocket blast this year," Leclerc said of the?stockmarket. "For there to be a little bit of a pullback is perfectly understandable."

The market headed sharply lower at the start of trading on Friday, then spent the rest of the day slowly recovering ground. By the closing bell, market indexes were roughly back to where they started.

Procter & Gamble announced late Thursday that it's bringing back its former CEO, A.G. Lafley, to run the company. The world's largest consumer-products maker, whose brands include Tide and Crest, is trying to increase sales in the face of tough competition. P&G rose $3.18 to $81.88.

Sears plunged 14 percent after the department-store chain reported a steep quarterly loss and slumping sales after the market closed Thursday. Sears lost $7.92 to $50.25.

The Nasdaq composite slipped 0.27 of a point to 3,459.14.

Eight of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 fell. Only financial?stocks?and consumer staples makers rose.

The?stock?market slipped Friday despite an encouraging report on U.S. manufacturing. The government said orders for long-lasting goods rebounded in April, helped by demand for aircraft and stronger business spending. The report suggests economic growth may hold steady this spring.

Until this week, signs of slow but steady economic growth and record profits for big companies had propelled stock-market indexes to all-time highs.

All but 11 companies in the S&P 500 have posted their first-quarter earnings, and the results have turned out much better than expected. Nearly seven of 10 have reported higher earnings than analysts had estimated. Overall profits in the first quarter are on track to climb 5 percent over the year before.

In the market for U.S. government bonds, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note dipped to 2.01 percent from 2.02 percent late Thursday.

The price of crude oil slipped 10 cents to settle at $94.15 a barrel, ending with a drop of $1.87 for the week. Gold lost $5.20 to $1,386.60 an ounce.

Trading was light ahead of the long weekend. U.S. financial markets will be closed Monday for Memorial Day.

Among other?stocks?in the news Friday:

? Intuitive Surgical gained 5 percent after a jury decided in favor of the maker of robotic medical equipment in the first of many lawsuits filed against the company. The plaintiffs argued that Intuitive was negligent in training doctors to use its equipment. Intuitive's?stock?rose $23.07 to $501.53.

? Titan Machinery plunged 9 percent. The company, which deals in agricultural and construction equipment, said late Thursday that weaker revenue will lead it to a wider quarterly loss than it had expected. Titan's?stock?lost $2.10 to $20.40.
