San Francisco Personal Injury Attorney On NFL Grant for Brain Injury ...

San Francisco Personal Injury Attorney Discusses NFL Grant for Brain Injury StudyThe NFL has donated $30 million dollars in the form of a grant to the?National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to study traumatic brain injury. And for this they should be applauded.

But the skeptic among us can?t help but ask ? why now and why not before?

And before we dive into this let?s make a couple of things clear: traumatic brain injury is a devastating disease and injury that impacts millions of injury victims every year, not just athletes, and $30 million dollars is a whole lot of money that will do a whole lot of folks a whole lot of good.

Nevertheless, the NFL has done studies in the past regarding traumatic brain injury. Of course, no one but the NFL is really sure of how many and to what extent the studies were conducted or what exactly their findings were. And that is because the NFL conducted previous studies themselves, which makes any data generated private by nature.

And because the NFL is staring down the barrel of thousands of lawsuits by former players alleging that the league worked to hide its true knowledge of the link between cognitive disorders and concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries, it seems only natural to wonder ? why hadn?t the league done their studies through groups like the NIH previously?

And if the players are successful in their lawsuits, the damages could make $30 million look like a drop-in-the-bucket.

According to media reports, the money will be used to study the impact of brain injuries and how mild traumatic brain injury causes damage to the brain. The data and knowledge gained from the studies will hopefully aid individuals who sustain traumatic brain injuries as well as stroke and neurological disorders.
